  • CAN A METAL ROOF HANDLE OUR WILD TEXAS WEATHER?

Metal roofing has a 140-mph wind rating. See how that stands up to our Texas Gulf Coast in the table below.

    • Tropical Depression Wind Speed below 39 mph
    • Tropical Storm Wind Speed of 39 to 73 mph
    • Category 1 Wind Speed of 74 to 95 mph
    • Category 2 Wind Speed of 96 to 110 mph
    • Category 3 Wind Speed of 111 to 130 mph
    • Category 4 Wind Speed of 131 to 155 mph
    • Category 5 Wind Speed over 156 mph.

So metal roofing should stand up to Category 4 winds. The wind resistance keeps it from uplift. What a relief in a storm!

  • HOW CAN I TELL MY ROOF NEEDS WORK FROM THE GROUND? OR NO LADDER?

    1. Not everyone is cut out to climb on top of their roof to inspect it for damage. If you don’t want to climb that ladder (or don’t own one), here are several ways to check for needed maintenance.
    2. Walking across the street can give you a different perspective than you normally see. Using binoculars can help. These are things to keep in mind, whatever roofing material you currently have.
    3. First of all, you are looking around your chimney, vent pipes and other trim work or flashings. The next place to look is where the water naturally runs from the roof into the gutters. You will also want to examine the eave overhangs looking for water damage.
    4. Check for shingles that are coming up. Look for cracks, which in asphalt shingles would look like darker areas on your roof. Slate roofs may have shingles missing or cracked shingles. Wood shake shingles need examined for splitting or pieces missing or edges curling up.
    5. Note any gaps anywhere or chipped or broken caulk.
    6. Another place to examine your roof is from inside the structure. You are looking for stains or weird colors on the ceiling.
    7. Your attic is another easy place to look for water issues. Keep an eye out for mold in insulation or wet damp wood and/or insulation.
  • HOW LONG DOES A METAL ROOF LAST?

Asphalt shingles last anywhere from 12  - 20 years. The blistering Texas sun is even harder on asphalt shingles. While a metal roof has a lifespan of 30-50 years and give you decades of durability.

Are metal roofs noisy in the rain?

It’s the same as a regular roof. The roof decking absorbs vibration, as does the other building materials,  attic insulation, and drywall in the ceiling. Studies have shown this is true.

  • WHICH TYPE OF ROOF IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

A steel roof is made of about 28% recycled metal and can be re-recycled at the end of the life of the roof. Metal roofs can also be installed over your existing roof without a tear-off.

Each year 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles go into our U.S. landfills, according to the National Association of Homebuilders Research Center. Not only do metal roofs last longer, so don’t need replaced as often, but by preserving your existing roof, they are a very green product leaving a small footprint.

  • ARE METAL ROOFS HEAVY?
